To Be A Freight Broker...  

First thing off the bat... this is not an over-the-night-get-rich scheme, you have to work for it.  Some students land accounts right away, and some take several months.  But if you go for it, it's well worth it.  To go into this business you must understand the step-by-step procedures of being a freight broker.  How the paperwork process work and how to use the load boards available to you.  Locating the shippers and carriers and how to negotiate the price of a load to move. The freight broker must have the license, which is called an authority, along with a bond or trust for $75,000 and a process agent.  We go over how and where to to these.

Earning Example:  Let's say the shipper pays $5,000 for a load and you find a Carriers Company to haul the load for $4,500. That is a $500 profit.  Broker keeps 100% of the earned income. The $500 goes into your pocket.

Entrepreneur Magazine has rated the freight brokerage business as one of the top home-based businesses to own and a recent Wall Street Journal article cited freight brokering and logistics as the largest growing sector of the transportation industry.

What is a property broker?

A licensed individual or companies who are to help the shippers find carriers to move their freight.

 

What the requirements of a property broker?

The property broker must obtain a "Surety Bond" with an approved bank or insurance company and maintain a "Process Service Agents" in all of the 48 states.

What is a Surety Bond?  Each company must prove they are capable of paying the carriers, owner operators, airlines, railroads and any other entity being used by the broker. The individuals credit and/or financial strength will be investigated and only then will a "Surety Bond" be issued.  Bonds vary in price, but have a company we will refer you to.

Must a Broker carry cargo and liability insurance?

By law, a broker is not required to carry cargo or liability insurance.

 

What do I need to be a Broker?

Computer, internet, email, telephone, fax machine on separate phone line.  File cabinet, file folder, hanging folder, etc.  You will have to have: Broker Authority / DOT# / MC#, Surety Bond or Trust Fund (obtained through a bonding company or your bank - we can help with this). Cost varies depending on your credit score. Usually between $250-$5,000 - a year.  Works like an insurance policy.  and a Process Agent.  

 

Can I work from home?

YES!  Is the prefect place to have a small business. This helps keep your expenses down and get more tax deductions.  Keep track of all receipts!

 

How long does it take for the business to take off on an average?

Usually 1-4 months to show a profit. This business is based on your determination and the time you put into it. What kind of shippers you get and the freight they give you. How many loads they give you and what do you sell them for.

A full time broker can make an average of $30,000 to well over $200,000 a year. It's unlimited according to your efforts and how focus you are on doing your job. But we will state we've trained brokers who make over 2 million a year. It all boils down to the individual and how far they wish to take this.

To Be An Agent.. 

To be a "Freight Broker-Agent" is to work for a freight broker as an independent agent in the transportation field.  You will need to learn how to broker a load from start to finish. To understand what the freight brokers are looking for in an agent, before they will hire you.  We also teach you how to pick a freight broker to work for, questions to ask and why are you asking them.

 

We have a list of about 50+ freight brokers looking for agent. You will be given a list of freight brokers that are looking for agents once you have completed the course. You have to present yourself professional, and locate some shippers before calling them.  You too will also receive a "Certificate of Completion."

Learn how to do the paperwork and procedures of booking a load from pick up to delivery. How to negotiate pricing of load between shippers and carriers.

 

Agent usually make between 40-70% of the earned income.

Earning Example: Shipper pays $5,000 for a load. You find a Carriers Company to haul the load for $4,500.  That is a $500 profit.  The broker's usually pay a new agents 50% of the earned income - which means out of the $500 profit you get $300.

$500 X 50%= $250  -  This goes into your pocket!

How much can an individual makes in this industry?  It all depends on the following:  you, your personality, who do you get for your shippers and carriers, what kind of freight are you moving and to what location, what does the load pay to you, and what are you negotiating with the carrier to haul it for.  There are many different variations to how much profit you will make in this industry.  But, if it's for you, it's very profitable!
